Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea

Important port and capital of Papua New Guinea, on the SE coast of the Gulf of Papua, in the SW Pacific Ocean. Founded in 1873 by John Moresby, in 1883 it became the capital of British New Guinea. A major Allied base in World War II, it was the object of a Japanese offensive in December 1942 and January 1943.
